I'm SO Confused!
Okay....I finally joined the bloggers. It's been a long time coming...but I figured, what the hell? If you can't beat 'em...join 'em. So....my first blog. What to say? I'm sitting on my ass on the Eastern Shore, trying to enjoy the final days of summer...trying to put off as long as possible the beginning of another stress-filled school year with three kids in three schools. I'm watching the democratic national convention on tv. Saw Michele Obama and Teddy Kennedy last night. OMG! I'm committed to defeating this guy Obama and wondering....why? My whole life experience says that the republicans have the right idea when it comes to running an economy...but Bush and his cronies totally fucked THAT up! So...it's a little easier to look at John McCain and say that he's going to keep a lid on government spending...he's the cheerleader for cutting pork out of politics, right? Champion of the line-item veto...campaign finance reform, blahblahblah...But there's a part of me that is totally PSYCHED at the prospect of electing Barack Obama the next president of the United States. Alot of racist bullshit would be finally put to rest with a black man in the White House, for one thing. And the United States could finally rid itself of the staid, milquetoast (sp?) leadership we've been associated with through most of the 20th century. But I still can't get past the idea that our economy will go from a recession to a depression overnight if Obama is elected president. And I guess that's what it comes down to with me.....I still believe that our economy does better if left to its own devices to grow than to be controlled, regulated, and dragged down by excessive taxation....The beauty of this election is that we have been given a very clear choice in McCain vs. Obama. I guess the outcome will decide once and for all which platform is the right one for America.

omg. congrats on the blog.
did you watch hrc tonight? unbelievable. never was a fan, but tonight she just was on fire. i'll turn you yet.
i gotta be honest...this is the most refreshing, whirling, honest post Ive seen in a while. touching all corners. you go with your gut; prolly the best way to do anything, including choosing a president.
BUT.
i must wonder...is it excessive taxation that has dragged this economy down? cause not only have my taxes not gone up during TWO wars, but I have in fact received TWO checks from the government for "tax rebates"...and yet here we are in the shitter. seems like the opposite may be true, no? keep on with the no taxes, is that the way to go? i dunno.
but I like your blog!! :)
Hahaha, welcome Helen. I'm already looking forward to your debates with the starry-eyed Xmastime and UG. You kicked things off with a bang!
"must wonder" instead of just "wonder" makes me ineligible. ugh.
In response to xmastime's musings about taxation...your point about how taxes have been lowered during bush admin and economy's still in the "shitter" (I believe was the technical term used) is a valid one, albeit incorrect. The reason the nation's in the "shitter" isn't because of lower taxes. On the contrary, if taxes hadn't been lowered when they were or, worse, if they had been raised, we would have likely entered the current recession much sooner than we did and it probably would have taken a much more serious turn. I blame Congress (which I believe is now controlled by Democrats) for allowing uncontrollable spending...not just for the war but for all those other pork barrel projects that get congressmen reelected every two years. And isn't it nicer to receive checks BACK from the government than the reverse???
i dont mind paying taxes if they go towards things of actual use; ie education, infrastructure, security, healthcare etc etc. Not fake wars to line the pockets of the already rich. If Im not paying in to make my life and those around me better off, why even have a country in the first place?
i think the $10B a week we're throwing down the drain in Iraq might have something to do with the recession. No?
And yes, I too remember those heady, GLORIOUS days of 2002-2006 when we had a humungous surplus, no overspending, zero pork, and free ice cream sandwiches 24/7 before those darned Democrats got in power and wrecked everything! hmm.
oooh. this is gonna be fun.
